Effective communication is a fundamental part of quality of life, yet it can be significantly impacted by progressive neurological conditions such as ALS. Early awareness and proactive planning are essential to ensure individuals can continue to express their needs, thoughts, and identity as changes occur. A range of strategies and tools—both low-tech and technology-based—can support communication at every stage. With the right guidance, communication can be adapted over time while preserving autonomy and dignity. This introduction outlines key approaches to supporting communication from diagnosis onward, with a focus on preparedness, flexibility, and person-centered care.
