ALS & Eye Tracking: Comparing Windows and iOS Speech-Generating Devices

• Trial, trial, trial! We highly recommend everyone do trial with multiple different devices. The quick demo you do during your 1-hour evaluation is not enough to get a sense of which system really works best for you.

 

• Try more than typing. In a quick trial, you may test out typing in the communication app. But it’s super important to try out a number of different activities before deciding: send a text message, open an email, save a picture, search for something on google, play your favorite game, etc. These activities will help you understand what system comes more naturally to you and which is easiest for your eyes.

 

• You’re choosing a device for five years. Don’t just think about your current needs and abilities; think ahead to what you might need later on. We have found that most people with ALS will need customizations to their device to remain successful communicators.

 

• Consider all factors. Being a regular iPhone or iPad user does not automatically mean an iOS SGD system is the best match for you. You need to think about your risk for needing advanced customizations, your capacity for learning new systems, and the level of support you will need.

 

• Customization and support are crucial to success, regardless of which device you choose!
